The Botanist Gin was created by the Bruichladdich whiskey distillery on the Islay island in the Hebrides in Scotland. Its mild and round taste is based on 22 local botanicals. The professional and full-time forager, James Donaldson, still collects the botanicals by hand today. He collects them on the hills, in the moors and on the coastlines of Islay, which gives The Botanist its very own Islay character.

In addition to the botanicals, the extremely slow distillation in the Lomond copper still called "Ugly Betty" is particularly important for the mild and balanced taste. The aromas are obtained through maceration or steam infusion, depending on the botanical. Adam Hannett, Head Distiller at Bruichladdich, relies on his experience and intuition without any high-tech equipment. He still measures when the optimum temperature has been reached, for example, by placing his hand on the still. In order to reduce the distilled gin to drinking strength, water from its own source is used.
