Deux Frères are the brothers Gian and Florian Grundböck. In 2015 they had the idea to develop a unique gin that changes color.
The first recipe for Deux Frères L1000T1 was created quietly and secretly, far away from the large gin factories, in a laboratory in Zurich who worked at home. At that time, the gin was still distilled in a 2.5 l batch under vacuum - with a self-made distillation system from individual glass components.
The first recipe consisted of 11 botanicals and had a distinctive but fine citrus aroma.
After numerous further distillations and recipe adjustments, the Deux Frères team found the decisive recipe a year and a half later in Tyrol together with a master distillator at the age of 25
Botanicals. It still gives the Deux Frères Gin its special taste today.
Recipe
Organic juniper berries, fresh organic lemon peel, rose petals, lavender flowers, angelica root, curcuma root, hyssop and orange petals: these are just some of the 25 botanicals that give Deux Frères Gin its unmistakable taste.
The exact recipe remains a well-kept secret, but this much can be revealed: 24 of the 25 botanicals are distilled according to the London Dry Standard. Only the 25th botanical, a dried flower, is only added after the distillation has ended and the gin is carefully macerated one last time.
The colors of the Deux Frères Gins
With the addition of the 25th Botanical, the Deux Frères Gin shines in a strong blue.
Responsible for this are the color pigments of the flower, which belong to the group of polyphenols, more precisely: to the so-called anthocyanins. These have an interesting property: They change their color depending on the pH value, i.e. they appear in different shades in the acidic and basic areas. In the pure blue state, the pH value of the gin is in the neutral range.
The addition of tonic changes this value into the slightly acidic range - and thus also the color of the gin from blue to purple to a soft pink. This color magic happens in a purely natural way, without the addition of stabilizers or additives - solely through the power of the flower.
Tasting Notes
The Deux Frères Gin is a high quality dry gin with a clear juniper note. Flowery, fresh on the nose, it unfolds its soft and harmonious aroma on the palate. It is characterized by a fine flavor and balanced aroma complexity.
The finish is long and persistent. Drunk neat, as a gin and tonic or as a cocktail: There are no limits to the Deux Frères Gin!
origin
The Deux Frères Gin was invented by two Swiss brothers. But the gin is distilled in beautiful Tyrol in Austria. A traditional distillery with around 400 years of experience and known for its fine brandies has taken on the Deux Frères production. The expertise of the Tyrolean master distillery and the copper distillation system of their distillery are decisive for the aromatic complexity of the gin.
The spirit is then carefully transported in chrome steel canisters to Zurich, where the hand-picked flowers are added to it and it is macerated one last time at low temperatures. The gin is then filled and labeled by hand with a lot of love and car
