Rock Rose Gin gets its wonderful flavour from a carefully selected and put together creation of local and traditional botanicals. Each one meticulously chosen for their flavour properties to create the perfect taste.

After fifty five experiments by Martin & Claire the final recipe was chosen to give a wee taste of Caithness and the very first batch was distilled on the 17th August 2014.

Rock Rose Gin is made using a slower vapour infused process to extract the botanical flavours and it is made in some of the most rugged but beautiful scenery in Scotland making it a true ‘Wonder of the Wilderness!

Originally distilled as an exclusive edition for the Craft Gin Club in August 2020, it was so well received we decided to make it part of our core range. Our most experimental edition to date was inspired by the Caithness coastline and is distilled using locally foraged kelp from Shore Seaweed and liquorice salt from Hebridean Mustard Company.

Rock Rose Gin Citrus Coastal Edition

Intense, bold and fresh with distinctive berry notes.

The higher ABV version of Rock Rose gives a strong warm pine release at the front of the drink with notes of lemon sherbet.  

The heart of the drink is very bold berries from the blaeberries, rowan and hawthorn.  These give way to the deeper earthier notes that are hidden in the original Rock Rose, such as angelica and orris.

Our hero botanical in the Winter Edition is spruce tips which Hanna, our gardener, collected basketfuls of in December last year. The Winter Edition has been created with thoughts of bracing walks, roaring fires and dark nights in mind. The original Rock Rose elements have been scaled down to allow the delightful earthy and slightly citrusy notes from the spruce tips to shine through.

Distilled using ingredients from our gardens and rockery to give a different, seasonal taste to Rock Rose Gin.

The challenge, set last year, was to make a citrus style gin using botanicals growing in the distillery garden and with no peels! Lots of discussions and research took place with Hanna, our gardener, and she planted, harvested and dried the botanicals that have gone into our Summer Edition.
The botanicals include lemon balm, clover, lemon thyme, pineapple sage, meadowsweet and elderflower.

Rock Rose Pink Grapefruit Old Tom gin derives from their popular ‘Design a Rock Rose Gin Label’ competition of 2016, which was released as the wonderful citrus-based Artists’ Edition. They decided to bring it back as a fresher version for 2019 using organic pink grapefruit peel, all lovingly peeled by their distillery team! These are added to their botanical basket and vapour infused along with all their traditional gin botanicals. It is then lightly sweetened with muscovado sugar.

Our Autumn Edition has been distilled using lots of locally grown botanicals as well as our traditional Rock Rose botanicals. It is bursting with blackberries and raspberries from Caithness Summer Fruits and blaeberries from the Dunnet area.

Grown in our very own geodome, Vietnamese coriander and nasturtium flowers add to the spice of the gin.

NC500 botanicals combine to create a fruitier gin with a delicate earthiness.
Celebrating our unique location, we use apple juice from the Black Isle and berries from the West Coast to create a slightly sweet, fruity note, while herbs from Caithness add a delicate earthiness to the gin.

A deliciously herbal gin with elements of citrus and hints of tea.

The gin is inspired by the Moorland Tea that Robert Burns is reputed to have enjoyed and is made to a unique recipe designed in-house.

With the ‘Toast to the Lassies’ the traditional way to celebrate the end of the Burns Night meal, this wee dram has been designed as a drink for the lassies. It features bilberry leaves, strawberry leaves, heather tops, speedwell and wild thyme - ingredients found in the Moorland Tea recipe.

Distilled using botanicals from within five miles of the Castle of Mey to create a wonderful flavour.

The botanicals used include sweet cicely, which brings lovely liquorice and aniseed notes the gin, bog myrtle, giving a sweet herbal flavour and finally apple mint which is a slightly sweeter mint to taste.

A rich and fruity sloe gin, with a smooth, warming finish.

Our beautiful Autumn Edition Gin, a warm spirit packed with locally grown botanicals, berries and spices, is used as the perfect base for our sloe gin. 
We collect local elderberries and blaeberries, and use the best sloeberries we can find to make the perfect liqueur. 
Sweetened with muscovado sugar, the result is a thick, dark sloe gin which is jammy and tart, yet smooth and rich.

Our Spring Edition is distilled using ingredients, foraged from the local area during Spring, that give a seasonal taste to our Original Rock Rose Gin. Reminiscent of a spring day in Caithness we use botanicals to provide a cool, refreshing taste! 
Coltsfoot from the distillery garden provides a delicious sweetness, while gorse flowers bring a gorgeous coconut like aroma. We have also used dandelion to help balance the sweetness with delicious earthy, liquorice flavours.

The Botanist Gin wurde von der Whisky-Destillerie Bruichladdich auf der Hebrideninnsel Islay in Schottland kreiert. Sein milder und runder Geschmack basiert auf 22 lokalen Botanicals. Der professionelle und hauptberufliche Forager, James Donaldson, sammelt die Botanicals noch heute von Hand. Er sammelt sie auf den Hügeln, in den Mooren und an den Küstenlinien von Islay, wodurch The Botanist seinen ganz eigenen Islay Charakter erhält.
Besonders wichtig für den milden und ausgewogenen Geschmack ist neben den Botanicals auch die außerordentlich langsame Destillation in der Lomond-Kupferbrennblase namens "Ugly Betty". Die Aromen werden je nach Botanical durch Mazeration oder durch Dampfinfusion gewonnen. Adam Hannett, Head Distiller bei Bruichladdich, vertraut dabei auf seine Erfahrung und Intuition ganz ohne High-Tec Equipment. Wann die optimale Temperatur erreicht ist, misst er zum Beispiel noch heute, indem er die Hand auf die Brennblase legt. Um den fertig destillierten Gin auf Trinkstärke zu reduzieren, wird Wasser aus der eigenen Quelle verwendet.

Traditioneller London Dry Gin aus einer Brennerei, die erst seit 2009 existiert. Grundlage für diesen Gin bildet ein selbst hergestelltes Destillat aus Roggen, in welches zum Wacholder u. a. Botanicals wie Orangen- und Zitronenschalen, Angelikawurzel, Lakritz und Mandeln hinzugefügt werden. Angenehmes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis, geeignet als Everyday-Gin für solche, die es ein wenig herber mögen.
 
Tasting Notes:
Nase: Blumige, sommerliche Wiesennoten, gefolgt von weichem, abgerundetem Wacholder und pikanter Zitrusfrische.
Gaumen: Trockener Wacholder führt, dann enthüllt Zitronentarte &amp; Orangenmarmelade, bevor alle Aromen harmonieren.
Finish: Trockenheit führt, mit würzigem Wacholder und einem Hauch von Zitronentarte.
