During the Third Crusade, in 1190 German crusaders from the besieged city of Akkon (Israel) founded a field hospital to care for wounded crusaders. This tried and tested hospital remained in existence even after the fighting ended and was dedicated to the care of sick pilgrims. In 1198 the existing hospital fraternity with the name "German Order" was converted into an order of knights.
In 1918 it was converted into the purely spiritual order that still exists today. By gaining knowledge of the healing power of oriental botanicals, an enormous wealth of knowledge about herbal medicine could be built up over the centuries of the history of the order.
In this tradition, the new construction of the Weyarner monastery terraces took place, which will preserve this knowledge and carry it into the future.
