Príncipe de los Apóstoles Mate Gin
+ Mistelhain's DASTONIC Trend Tonic Water

The Príncipe de los Apóstoles Mate Gin is the creation of Argentina's most famous mixologist, Renato "Tato" Giovannoni, owner and bar manager of the Bar Florería Atlantico in Buenos Aires, which was recently voted the third best bar in the world in 2019. With the gin, he realised his lifelong dream a few years ago and created a homage to the most Argentinian of all drinks - mate tea.

Príncipe de los Apóstoles Mate Gin is made by distilling individually macerated solutions of juniper berries, fresh mate leaves, eucalyptus, peperina (a plant endemic only to Argentina, aromatically reminiscent of mint), coriander seeds and the peel of pink grapefruit in a small, 200-litre copper still in the Argentinian highlands, where it is also bottled in individually numbered bottles after a rest period.

Taste:

Incomparably fresh and mild.

The combination of the typical aromas of the Argentine north of mate, eucalyptus, peperina (a species endemic only in Argentina and similar to our mint) and pink grapefruit with juniper berries and coriander seeds as classic gin components, guarantees an exciting, summery composition in which fresh, spicy and sweet components harmoniously intertwine.

On the palate, the gin is so velvety smooth that it is also a real pleasure neat. At first, the influence of peperina and eucalyptus is reminiscent of the popular mint-chocolate bars before the taste clearly gains depth with sweet-fruity components and the tart mate.

Recommendation:

Definitely try the first sip neat! Then refreshing as a gin & tonic with a mild tonic water and a small piece of grapefruit zest as a garnish - for the aromatic kick, squeeze the zest once over the glass. However, the gin unfolds its aromatic power most excitingly in wacky new cocktail creations or old classics, which it gives a completely new, modern character.
